The Kilimanjaro region is home to much more than just the mighty Mt. Kilimanjaro. If you’re aiming to summit the mighty massif, here are a few other things you can check out while you’re in the area.
Hikers travel from all over the world to ascend the great Mt. Kilimanjaro. Located in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, the massive landform dominates the region’s landscape. But Tanzania is rich with many other attractions, less famous than the mighty mountain, but no less beautiful and fascinating.
Picnic at Lake Chala
Lake Chala is a volcanic crater lake is a short drive from Moshi, Kilimanjaro. Being a less popular (but still gorgeous!) choice than others makes this a peaceful place away from the crowds. It’s perfect for a daytime excursion, providing the perfect ambience for a short hike and picnic lunch!
Go on a safari
The area surrounding Mt. Kilimanjaro is the Kilimanjaro National Park– 652 square miles of protected conservation areas, and it surrounds the whole mountain. The park is home to many different kinds of animals, like elephants, bushbucks, blue monkeys, bushbabies and leopards.
Take a coffee tour
Thanks to the fertile soil that found in the Kilimanjaro region, as well as the consistently warm climate, the region provides the perfect growing conditions for Arabica coffee. Several coffee plantations have made their home here, and a few offer tours of their plantations.
Hike the Materuni Waterfall
A local attraction, the Materuni Waterfall is found in the Moshi province of the Kilimanjaro region. A short hike through the Tanzanian jungle, it has been said that coming upon it is like discovering a secret cove. The beautiful waterfall and its little pool is the perfect cool treat after a hot hike!
“Olpopongi” Cultural Village and Museum
This cultural village was founded with the intention of educating tourists about the Maasai way of life. With buildings built in the traditional Maasai way, the village is staffed by Maasai people. With only some mild modifications, the village is the perfect way to experience authentic Maasai culture.
